Children's Theatre

The mission of the Redwood Area Theatre's youth program is to provide a comprehensive theatre experience for youth by building skills in all areas of theatre, providing leadership opportunities for older students and promoting a lifelong love of theatre and the arts.

Redwood Area Theatre has a commitment to offering both creative and learning opportunities to the youth of our area. We have offered a Children's Theatre program in Redwood Falls (open to all students in the area) since 1994. Besides singing, dancing, and acting, students work with set construction, sound, lights, music, costuming, promotion, and stage management. These workshops have also been great opportunities for middle school and high school students to assist in all of the various areas of theatre.

In 2001, a Children's Theatre Program was developed in the Wabasso community. It has been a huge success! An exciting result for these youth actors is that many of them have gone on to be involved in the adult RAT summer productions, and in both their high school and college theatre productions. If you are interested in being a part of RAT Children's Theatre, either as staff or as a volunteer, please feel free to contact a RAT Board Member.

Wabasso's Children's Theatre is open to children from 2nd through 5th grades. During a period of two weeks, actors participate in as many aspects of theatre as possible, from auditions the first day to constructing and painting sets, drawing promotional posters, voice throwing (speaking as LOUDLY as they possibly can), to singing, acting, choreography, etc. The cast rehearses for three hours each morning and performs on a Thursday evening. The remaining day is for striking the set and a cast party to watch the show and celebrate their success.

The Wabasso Children's Theatre program is made possible by the collaborative support of Redwood Area Theatre, Wabasso Community Education, area businesses, and many community members.

Prior Wabasso Children's Theatre shows include:

The Emperor's New Clothes ~ 2004

A Knight to Remember ~ 2003

Who Pushed Humpty? ~ 2002

The Princess and the Penguin ~ 2001
